25. End of Death (II)
Jay stared at the six hundred sixty-six Good Quality skeleton cores piled up on the deck in front of him. Normally, when you killed dungeon monsters, they provided an assortment of Rank 3 loot. Sometimes they could offer loot that was above their rank. If they provided loot below their rank, it would be a huge surplus of such. But you couldnât really predict what you would get when you killed dungeon monsters.
Jay held one of the skeleton cores in his hand. He rarely paid too much attention to monster cores. Once the loot dropped, he quickly stuffed them away. But he turned the core around and traced his fingers over the shape of a short and stubby bone the size of his palm. It had a crystal-like surface and glinted like a pearl under the sunlight. And when he concentrated with his spatial-g, he could barely catch the wavering energy of magic inside.
It would be better for the [Mages] and [Crafters] to examine the cores. All Jay knew about them was what he could dig up in the archives. His idea for bringing the skeleton crew of Dauntless up to the overworld came from there.
An unnamed traveler had written a text saying the cores were the individual souls and experiences of dungeon monsters, splintered from the inner-System run by the dungeon cores. Inside of them was a small piece of the dungeon that could be used for crafting, magicking, empowering, and more. They were multifaceted things with plenty of purposes that could be used as ingredients or parts added to tools. And this was something the unnamed traveler recognized as useful, but heâd then turned around and wrote in his text a question. âCould the monster cores still be seen as the essence of the monsters weâd slain? And could they be revived on the other side to serve as friends, guides, or more?â
Jay couldnât remember what he did to get Kleo out of the Toyreveler Dungeon. He only knew that he wanted to save her and defy the System that was very against dungeon monsters exiting their dungeons improperly. The backlash from his actions continued to reverberate till now, yet Jay couldnât help but think of serving himself once again. But differently, this time. He offered his crew an option. They had been three hundred strong when they heard the option before the battle between the governor and the pirate king. After the battle, Jayâs crew found a bunch of good skeletons trying to flee from their cruel masters and the dozens of sunken ships that had torn each other apart.
Jay had picked up the stragglers, got some more loot, a few more ships, and sailed the rest of the way leisurely as the end neared. The new skeletons learned from the old skeletons, and with little pushback, all of them agreed as a collective to bet on Captain Jay Luckrun. So, Jay had done the butcherâs work, killing each and everyone of his good skelly boys and girls and gathered their cores.
